I don't like the kid, but he sure can drive. I think he is proving to be the next Jeff Gordon after yesterday's domination of Infineon. He can win anywhere it seems!

What a kickass win! My heart was racing, wondering if Jr. had enough gas to pull off the win. We still don't know, but hey a win's a win. Now that THAT monkey is off his back he can make a try for the Championship!

Darn that Jimmie Johnson. I was so hoping one of those cautions would be Jimmie blowing an engine or losing a tire. I don't ever want anyone to get hurt.........so just a little crash.......enough so that Jeff would have finished better than JJ. Maybe he and Kenseth could have wrecked each other at the end.

Next 2 races will be interesting. I only hope Jeff can get his points lead back. I know he has accepted this is the way things are with the new Chase points system. I will be upset as a Gordon fan if he doesn't win it. It will be the 2nd time he gets the short end of the stick after they made a change to the points system.

I still think it's between Jeff and Jimmie, though mathmatically they say the top 6 are still in it. Bowyer has maybe an outside chance if both JJ and JG do poorly these last 2 races.

Prejudice

I happened to be flipping through the channel's tonight and came across a NASCAR story on Lou Dobbs show (on CNN). Anyway apparently the U.S. Congress put out a memo of some type suggesting that aides and other government officials going to the upcoming NASCAR race at Charlotte to get all their immunizations. Now Dobbs and a Republican congressman (from NC of course) took this as prejudice. Of course the Democrat they had on defended the memo saying "it was meant for any large event, in case of an attack." Now I'm not attacking Democrats (I'm an independant and actually lean towards that party). That's neither here nor there though. I'm sick and tired of the general attitude by most non-NASCAR fans that we're all a bunch of beer-swilling, toothless rednecks. I don't mind the biggest idea that I get from people that it's just "cars turning left for hours." They just don't get it and that's fine. But when people down-grade everyone that watches a sport (the #2 sport in the U.S.) it just kind of rubs me wrong I guess. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? I'm curious what you guys think.

Ok, so it was just a replay of Watkins Glenn... (maybe I'm the only one who watched the replay)

Is it just me, or have there been an unusually high amount of rain cancellations this year? Seems to be the 5th or 6th race I'll miss this year because they had to run it on Monday.

In other news, I was somewhat hopeful about the new addition of Kyle Busch to Gibbs racing (now all they need is Harvick to round things out and they'd have the 4 hottest heads in NASCAR) until I found out today that that Kyle is a... Michigan fan...

I know Jr. has said he didn't really want to drive the 3, but what are the odds that this new spin on the #8 have brought a new perspective to things? I don't think it's going to be the case but I wonder if it's made him put some serious consideration into it (I'm sure RCR would release the number for him to use).

Budweiser will not follow Jr. next year

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) -- When Dale Earnhardt Jr. leaves his late father's team to drive for Hendrick Motorsports next season, longtime corporate sponsor Budweiser won't be going with him.

The Hendrick team announced on Friday that Budweiser would not continue as the sponsor of Earnhardt's car next season because of Hendrick's ``long-term contractual commitments to existing sponsors.''

Earnhardt announced in June that he would leave Dale Earnhardt Inc. to join the Hendrick team next season, but Hendrick has not yet made it clear what number car Earnhardt will drive or who his sponsor will be.

Kyle Busch, who is leaving the Hendrick team at the end of the season to make room for Earnhardt, currently drives a No. 5 car with sponsorship from Kellogg's and several other companies.

``We have agreements in place with sponsors for the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, which prevent us from having a relationship with Budweiser,'' team owner Rick Hendrick said in a statement. ``Honoring our commitments is important to us. The trade-off is missing an opportunity to bring Budweiser, a marquee brand synonymous with NASCAR and its fans, into the fold.''

The team has not announced a timetable for its sponsorship announcements.

``They had a full plate,'' said Earnhardt, who said he'd prefer to keep driving the No. 8 car for his new team. ``They had sponsors pretty much already signed in agreements through '08. It wasn't really an option for Rick to make room.''

Budweiser will continue as a sponsor in NASCAR.

``Budweiser has sponsored Dale Jr. for nearly a decade, and we wish him the very best,'' said Tony Ponturo, vice president of global media and sports marketing for Anheuser-Busch Inc. ``Budweiser will remain an active sponsor of NASCAR, and we look forward to building upon the legacy of the iconic Budweiser red car in 2008 and beyond.''

Earnhardt called it a ``privilege'' to drive the Budweiser car.

``Although Budweiser and I will be unable to continue our partnership beyond this season, I remain committed to driving for Bud the rest of this year,'' Earnhardt said. ``I'm a race car driver. All I can do is drive as hard as I can for my fans and sponsorship partners and give my best effort each weekend.''

Earnhardt said he had some regrets about splitting with the Budweiser brand, but he's excited to see what new sponsorship deals the team will put together.

``We felt like we possibly only accomplished half of what we could do together, so that part of it's kind of unfortunate,'' Earnhardt said before qualifying at Chicagoland Speedway. ``Sure, I would have loved to continue working with Bud. But under the circumstances, that's not a possibility. We'll have to change our frame of mind and see what the possibilities are for our primary sponsors next year. Those should be in line with what I like and what I enjoy, and I'm excited to put that together.''

Earnhardt said it would be ``cool'' if Budweiser decided to stick with DEI, but believes there might be substance to rumors that the company is looking at sponsoring Evernham Motorsports driver Kasey Kahne.

``You hear the rumors -- they've been looking at Kasey Kahne for about two months now in case things weren't going to work out, I guess,'' Earnhardt said. ``So they've definitely been entertaining some ideas on other drivers. Kasey would really have a lot of fun with that. I think they would enjoy Kasey, might bring him out of his shell a little bit.''

Beginning with the 2008 season, Sprint will replace Nextel as title sponsor of NASCAR's premiere racing series, multiple high-ranking industry sources told ESPN.com on condition of anonymity.

The series will be known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, sources said.

NASCAR declined comment.

Dean Kessel, Sprint's NASCAR marketing director, denied the claims, and said Sprint/Nextel is still sorting the proposition out with NASCAR. Kessel also said that multiple outstanding details must be finalized internally before a decision can be made either way.

This would mark the third name since 2003 for NASCAR's Cup Series.

From 1972-2003, the Cup Series was sponsored by R.J. Reynolds tobacco through its Winston cigarette brand. Then, starting in 2004, Nextel assumed the naming rights to the most popular racing series in the United States.

Sprint and Nextel agreed to a $36 billion merger in December 2004.

#8 to follow Jr?

SONOMA, Calif. -- Car owner Rick Hendrick has let it be known to officials at Dale Earnhardt Inc. that he'd like to purchase the No. 8 for Dale Earnhardt Jr. when he begins driving for his organization in 2008.

"I'm not sure what their position is or what they want for it," Hendrick said Saturday between practices at Infineon Raceway.

Earnhardt said last week he would like to stay in the No. 8 if a deal can be reached with DEI owner Teresa Earnhardt, who has the rights to the number and his long-time sponsor, Budweiser.

Max Siegel, the president of global operations at DEI, said he will not act until there is a formal proposal.

Hendrick doesn't expect any sort of announcement for at least a few weeks.

"Honestly, we're leaving everything open," he said. "It's just so early. If you say you're going to do something and you really think you are, six weeks from now we might change our mind again.

"We're working through our sponsors and everything."

Gordon, Johnson fail inspections

Cars by Johnson, Gordon fail inspection
By MIKE HARRIS, AP Auto Racing Writer

June 22, 2007

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) -- The cars driven by Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson failed initial inspection and won't be allowed to practice or qualify Friday for the Nextel Cup race at Infineon Raceway.

The No. 24 and No. 48 Chevrolets had modifications to the front fenders ``found to be outside NASCAR tolerances,'' NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said. No further penalties or suspensions were announced.

Poston said the teams may repair their cars in an effort to pass inspection. Since they are prohibited from qualifying, both cars would have to start from the rear of the 43-car field in Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 if they do meet inspection standards.

This is the first road race for NASCAR's new Car of Tomorrow, a bigger, bulkier and reputedly safer car that has been in development for seven years. It has run in six races this season, all on ovals.

``It's important to know that this is a Car of Tomorrow penalty,'' Poston said. ``The inspection process and NASCAR's reaction to violations to the Car of Tomorrow violations are going to be more severe. We're going to keep this car in check.

``It's important to know that all cars in the field are starting out equal and all have the same opportunity to win as the other.''

Asked why the cars could still be allowed to pass inspection and race, Poston said: ``That's been our practice in the past, that we've given teams an opportunity to repair cars that have failed inspection. And we'll do the same here.''

Poston said NASCAR would determine any further penalties assessed to the two Hendrick Motorsports teams after officials return to their Daytona Beach, Fla., headquarters following the race.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was docked 100 points and crew chief Tony Eury Jr. was fined $100,000 and suspended six races after NASCAR discovered illegal brackets on the rear wing of the No. 8 COT Chevrolet last month at Darlington Raceway.

The Hendrick team's other two cars, the No. 5 of Kyle Busch and No. 25 of Casey Mears, passed initial inspection. They are built in a different shop at Hendrick Motorsports.

Earnhardt signs deal with Sony

By TOM GARDNER, Associated Press Writer

June 22, 2007

OAKVILLE, Calif. (AP) -- From the time his sister lent him money to buy his first computer, Dale Earnardt Jr. has been wowed by technology. Now, NASCAR's most popular driver has an endorsement deal with Sony Electronics.

``I'm a big electronics fan. I'm a big computer guy. It's products I can dig,'' Earnhardt said Thursday at a winery in the heart of California's Napa Valley, where he announced the Sony deal. He will be competing on Sunday in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway in nearby Sonoma.

His deal with Sony is a personal services contract that gives the company use of his name, likeness and voice for promotions. He also has a similar deal with Budweiser that will continue next year, regardless of what's on his car.

Meanwhile, Junior still isn't saying what role longtime sponsor Budweiser will have with him when he joins Hendrick Motorsports next season.

Budweiser has been Earnhardt's primary sponsor since 1999, and the beer manufacturer wants to continue its relationship with him at Hendrick. But car owner Rick Hendrick isn't actively pursuing new sponsors, and it's possible Bud could get shut out.

Earnhardt also said a possible endorsement deal with sporting goods manufacturer Adidas was ``on the wish list.''

Earnhardt's move to Hendrick is expected to clean up his sometimes scruffy image to match that of his teammates, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, although he appeared at Thursday's news conference in a scraggy beard, an untucked dress shirt and worn jeans -- with Puma athletic shoes.

Earnhardt said he took to computers early on, but that his father never believed the Internet would be a success.

``That's one place he was wrong and I was right. I took a lot of typing classes in high school,'' he said.

Neither Earnhardt nor Stuart Redsun, Sony's vice president of corporate marketing, would discuss the financial arrangement or the length of the deal.

``We're very happy at Sony to have Dale Junior involved for some time,'' Redsun said.

Earnhardt said he got a new digital camera out of the deal.

``The cash is great, but the product is good, too,'' he said.

Jeff Gordon and wife have baby girl

June 20, 2007

NEW YORK, N.Y. (AP) -- Jeff Gordon won't have to miss a race for the birth of his daughter.

NASCAR's four-time champion became a father Wednesday when his wife, model Ingrid Vandebosch, gave birth to a girl. Gordon announced on his Web site that Ella Sofia Gordon was born Wednesday morning.

``It's been an absolutely incredible experience,'' Gordon said. ``Ingrid came through amazingly and we're both really happy and overjoyed. We can't wait to get home and start our lives together as a family.''

Gordon asked Mark Martin to be on standby this weekend in case he had to leave the race in Sonoma, Calif., to return for the birth. He said he'll travel to California later this week and participate in all on-track activities at Infineon Raceway.

Gordon's baby was born two days after Tiger Woods' daughter.

Jr moving to Hendricks?

For Earnhardt Jr., all signs point to Hendrick in 2008
Announcement regarding future to come on Wednesday
By David Caraviello, NASCAR.COM
June 12, 2007
06:02 PM EDT

Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr., racing together as teammates -- it's a powerhouse combination of megawatt marketability that will become reality at Hendrick Motorsports next year.

Earnhardt has scheduled an 11 a.m. ET news conference at his JR Motorsports shop in Mooresville, N.C., during which he will announce his plans for next season, according to a team spokesman. Sources have indicated to NASCAR.COM that those plans center on Hendrick Motorsports, the most successful organization in Nextel Cup this season, with 10 race victories in 14 starts.

Sources also told NASCAR.COM that Earnhardt will replace Kyle Busch, who will not be in Hendrick's No. 5 car next season. A Hendrick spokesman declined to comment, while a JR Motorsports spokesman would confirm only that Wednesday's announcement concerned Earnhardt's plans for 2008 and beyond. Earnhardt has been looking for a new ride since he announced his plans to split from Dale Earnhardt Inc when his contract expires at the end of this season.

Hendrick, with six total championships on NASCAR's premier series, fits with Earnhardt's desires to drive for a contender and to continue to pilot Chevrolets. The Hendrick team also had ties to Earnhardt's late father, who shook down the first car the organization ever built, and was behind the wheel when team owner Rick Hendrick recorded his first NASCAR victory in a Busch race at Charlotte in 1983.

Earnhardt Jr.'s car sponsor, Budweiser, also appeared on Hendrick cars in the mid-1990s, but indications are that the beer company may not follow its new driver to his new team. Earnhardt has only a personal services deal remaining with Budweiser for next season, opening the possibility that he could step into the same Kellogg's-backed car that Busch drives now.

The Sporting News Wire Service reports that the Budweiser brand that sponsors the No. 8 DEI car will not be involved in Wednesday's news conference in any way. Nor has Budweiser been part of Earnhardt's negotiations with potential new employers, according to Anheuser-Busch spokesperson Brian Eaton.

Earnhardt and his manager, sister Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, have spoken with a number of unspecified team owners since the driver's impending departure from DEI was announced May 10. Three Chevy teams -- Hendrick, Richard Childress Racing, and Joe Gibbs Racing -- emerged as frontrunners, with Ginn Racing lurking as a dark horse.

But Childress, owner of the team that fielded cars for Earnhardt's father, was on a hunting expedition Tuesday in New Zealand, and not expected to return until the end of the week. The Gibbs team has expressed unease with the presence of a beer sponsor, as well as the idea of a rapid expansion to a fourth team. Team president J.D. Gibbs is also out of the office this week on vacation, according to his assistant.

The addition of Earnhardt leaves Hendrick with a 2008 lineup that also includes four-time champion Gordon, reigning Nextel Cup champ Jimmie Johnson, and Casey Mears, who won his first race on NASCAR's premier circuit last month at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Now add to that mix the sport's most popular driver, with 17 career race wins, three career finishes inside the top five in final points, and a legion of devoted, red-clad fans.

As recently as last month, any potential marriage between Hendrick and Earnhardt seemed unlikely. Hendrick's team is already at NASCAR's impending four-car limit, and has four drivers under contract beyond this season. Asked by reporters whether his team could accommodate Earnhardt, Hendrick said there was "no room at the inn."

But now, apparently, there is. The impending departure of Busch, a four-time Nextel Cup race winner whose contract expires after the 2008 season, will make teammates out of Earnhardt and Gordon, the two biggest names in the sport, in an alliance made in marketing heaven.

Mark Martin could be changing NASCAR's future with his part-time success.
By Bill Kimm, NASCAR.COM
June 6, 2007

-Take nothing away from what Mark Martin has accomplished 13 races into this season. With six top-10s and four top-fives, he's on pace to match his 2002 season when he finished runner-up to eventual champion Tony Stewart.

Which is exactly why Martin, if he keeps this up, will ruin NASCAR.

At the halfway point of the Chase, Martin currently sits 12th in points and would qualify for NASCAR's version of the postseason -- all while racing in just 10 events compared to everyone else who has raced 13.

It all started with that amazing finish at Daytona, when Martin came up just short to Kevin Harvick. Martin followed that up with two consecutive fifth-place finishes at California and Las Vegas and a 10th at Atlanta. Then the talking began.

The part-time Martin was actually leading in points. It was very conceivable he could make the Chase on a part-time schedule.

Of course, with the next two races at Bristol and Martinsville, both races in which Regan Smith would take over the No. 01 Chevy for Ginn Racing, Martin's point lead eventually evaporated.

But here we are 13 races into the schedule and Martin is Chase eligible.

This is the worst-case scenario for NASCAR.

This sport has always prided itself on being the most fan-friendly of any in America. One reason that is the case -- all 36 races on the schedule, all of the best drivers in the country are featured at one racetrack.

With Martin's success this season on a pick-and-choose basis, the NASCAR we know and love could all but disappear.

Where is the benefit for Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson or Tony Stewart or Dale Earnhardt Jr. to race 36 races? All that matters to sponsors, to teams and to drivers is make the Chase and have a shot at the championship.

Why would Junior, who is not a good road-racer with no wins in 14 combined races at Sonoma and Watkins Glen, drive at either track? There's no point.

Junior could take a couple weeks off, enjoy the break, and let an up-and-comer get some experience. Or put a ringer like a Ron Fellows or Boris Said in the car.

If a driver knows he can miss a race and not take that much of a hit in points, why not take a week or two off?

Look at this season. Johnson and Gordon are running away with the top-two point positions. It is conceivable, both drivers could take three races off, and still sit comfortably in the top 12. Not borderline, comfortably.

And with the current Chase points system, all Gordon and Johnson would have to do is make the Chase, and they will start 1-2 when it begins.

With the success of Mark Martin running part-time this season, other drivers are taking notice and it has them looking at extending their careers.

No one will win three or four races this season the way the Hendrick duo has. So when the Chase begins in New Hampshire, despite where the two finish -- as long as they are in the top 12 they will be seeded 1-2.

So is it not in their best interest to take a couple weeks off and be refreshed when the Chase starts in September?

And don't for a second think the sponsors won't be on board with this.

DuPont, Lowe's, Home Depot, Budweiser, all of them will be just fine backing a car for all 36 races, as long as their money driver gets into the Chase. There is no way one of those sponsors will take their precious dollars away because their marquee driver takes a few weeks off, it just isn't logical.

It's a win-win for all involved. Drivers get a few weeks off, owners get some young guy valuable track time, sponsors will still see their car in the Chase -- the only people who suffer are the fans.

All the Sonoma fans that pay big bucks to see Junior race, get Fellows in the No. 8 instead. Or everyone at Richmond who expected to see Gordon and Johnson battle for the points lead heading into the Chase don't even see the No. 48 or No. 24 on the track because -- well honestly, there is no need.

Gordon has already said this has given him a new outlook on his career.

"I can tell you what, what Mark has done has probably extended my career," Gordon said. "It's now going to make me look at when that day comes when I feel like I can no longer race full time in the Cup Series. I might still want to race part time.

"I'm not saying we could pull it off, but it's something I would consider now,"

That statement scares me.

I don't want NASCAR turning into golf. I don't want to see Gordon, Johnson, Junior and Stewart turn into Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els and pick which events they will participate in. I want to know when I go to a track, my favorite driver is going to be there.

Don't get me wrong, what Martin has done has been impressive. And if he can make the Chase on a part-time schedule, even more of a feat. But the next time you go to a race or turn on the TV expecting to see your favorite driver only to see a guy in that car you've barely heard of -- blame Mark Martin.

Unbeknownst to him, he has changed the way drivers look at a 36-race schedule, and it's not for the benefit of the sport or its fans.

We got the 600 this weekend at Lowes Motor Speedway, and though it's unlikely we'll see some dude running around in his tidey whitey's, it should be a good show. Who wants to hang? It seems Nascar fans are few and far between in the Bay Area, so we gotta stick together :) We'll let you in even if you show up wearing 24 or 48.

Good race. I know I said I'd puke if another Hendrick car won this month, but Mears doesn't really count. It was good to see him get his first win and fitting to have the "National Guard" car win on this weekend. It was also nice to see Kyle Petty have a good finish. He is an all-around nice guy in my opinion and does a lot for charity and the sport's image.

Not Immune

Not Immune

By Jerry Bonkowski, Yahoo! Sports

May 15, 2007

Two weekends ago in Richmond, NASCAR learned a very valuable lesson: Don't mess with Mother Nature. It tried to start a race, thinking the rain would stop, but after 12 laps it proved futile.

Tuesday, Dale Earnhardt Jr., crew chief Tony Eury Jr. and the rest of Dale Earnhardt Inc. learned a very valuable lesson as well: Don't mess with Mother NASCAR.

And if you do, be prepared for the consequences – which in Tuesday's case were extremely heavy.

If NASCAR wanted to make an example of someone daring to defy very stringent rules against attempting to modify its new pride and joy, the Car of Tomorrow, they certainly proved that point with the penalties doled out to Dale Jr. and Tony Jr.

For being found with illegal bracket mounts on the rear wing of the Car of Tomorrow during a post-qualifying inspection last weekend at Darlington, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was docked 100 driver points, which drops him from 12th to 14th place in the standings, a distant 721 points behind series leader Jeff Gordon, who won this past Sunday at Darlington.

More importantly, if the Chase for the Nextel Cup were to start today, Earnhardt would not make it. He's currently 54 points out of the top-12 qualifying threshold.

Eury Jr., meanwhile, was fined $100,000 and suspended for six races, and Teresa Earnhardt was docked 100 owner points.

NASCAR proved Tuesday that it is not afraid to go after its favorite son. While many critics might feel Earnhardt had an "untouchable" tag placed upon him by NASCAR's major potentates, even his status as far and away the most popular icon in the sport was not enough to prevent the sanctioning body from coming down fully and quite forcefully with its hammer.

While Dale Jr. fans might ask, "How could they?", NASCAR proved it really means business when it comes to Brian France's pride and joy, otherwise known as the COT.

And nobody, not even someone whose last name is Earnhardt, will be allowed to deviate from the strict tolerances and templates that the COT must stringently adhere to.

Even with Eury Jr. claiming that it was an inadvertent mistake, that the offending brackets used to affix the rear wing of the COT to the body were old "test" models, NASCAR would have nothing of it.

Earnhardt said over the weekend at Darlington after the infraction was detected that he would pay whatever fine was likely to be handed down to Eury – but I'm willing to bet he never thought he'd be paying such a hefty sum.

So what does Tuesday's announcement mean in the whole scheme of things? Is Junior going to become the latest poster boy for actions detrimental to the sport of auto racing, as NASCAR likes to say?

Or maybe it's something entirely different.

Why, I wouldn't be totally surprised if NASCAR is still upset that Junior decided to upset the sport's apple cart when he announced last week that he'd be leaving DEI at the end of this season and seek to join another team or form his own Nextel Cup team.

That news shook NASCAR to its core, a 10 on the Richter scale of racing news. It was the last thing that a sport which has been struggling over the last year with waning fan interest, sagging ticket sales and lower TV ratings needed.

That Earnhardt would have the gumption to leave the company that his father built primarily for him, that he'd likely take Budweiser with him, that driving what has become the legendary No. 8 will now likely have to become some other number are things NASCAR simply doesn't need.

The COT aside, NASCAR likes to maintain the status quo. It likes to keep familiar faces in familiar places.

Sure, DEI will get a hearing to appeal all of the penalties assessed Tuesday. While Eury and team director of global operations Max Siegel both claim using the illegal brackets was an inadvertent – and honest – mistake, it's pretty clear that NASCAR's reaction was no mistake at all.

It wanted to send strong messages in several different directions and to several different people, and that's exactly what it did. For those doubters who thought Junior would never be singled out because of his lofty place in the sport, guess again.
Earnhardt docked 100 points, crew chief fined, suspended

By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer

AP - May 15, 5:24 pm EDT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. was docked 100 points Tuesday, and his crew chief was fined $100,000 and suspended for six races for an illegal part at Darlington Raceway.

The penalty, for illegal modifications to the rear wing on Earnhardt's Car of Tomorrow, is a significant setback in his team's bid to win a Cup title before racing's most popular driver leaves after the season.

Dale Earnhardt Inc. will appeal, team president Max Siegel said. Crew chief Tony Eury Jr., who is also Earnhardt's cousin, is expected to work Saturday night's All-Star race because suspensions do not begin until the appeals process is heard.

``We are not disputing the ruling,'' Siegel said. ``But we are appealing the severity of the penalty because the penalty itself is not spelled out in the rule book.''

NASCAR, however, sent a March 21 memo outlining penalties for specific infractions on the Car of Tomorrow and specifically listed fines of $100,000, points deductions and suspension.

The penalty knocked Earnhardt from 12th in the standings -- the final qualifying position for the Chase for the championship -- to 14th. He's now 721 points behind Nextel Cup leader Jeff Gordon, and 54 points out of Chase contention.

``The team is like a family and they are pretty resilient,'' Siegel said. ``I met with them all this morning and I didn't get any sense at all that anybody was freaking out. Everyone went into a 'What do we do now?' mode. It is what it is -- it was a mistake, and it's unfortunate. But we'll move on.''

Earnhardt announced last week he will leave DEI, his late father's company, after the season. He was not available for comment Tuesday, but Siegel said he met with the crew earlier in the day and the driver was present. Although the team has been in turmoil since Earnhardt's announcement, the driver and crew have promised to race hard for the rest of the year.

NASCAR inspectors said Earnhardt's rear wing was improperly mounted when it was checked Saturday at Darlington. The brackets used to mount the piece were confiscated.

Eury, who has never had a major infraction during his seven years as a Cup crew chief, said the problem with the wing was not intentional. He said the brackets were an old set that had been used during a test session.

``It was kind of just a bad deal, a part that got on there that shouldn't have,'' he said. ``There was a lot of offseason testing for NASCAR. There's been like three different kinds of brackets on there and it just happened to be one of the old-style brackets.''

``It really wasn't that big of a deal,'' he added. ``It really didn't change anything.''

But NASCAR competition director Robin Pemberton said the infraction was blatant.

The car initially passed a pre-qualifying inspection, and when the wing did not pass the next day, it was removed for further examination. Once off the car, NASCAR discovered the brackets had been intentionally modified, Pemberton said.

``There is no doubt whatsoever,'' it was intentional, Pemberton said. ``We are very surprised and disappointed in Tony.''

Pemberton said the pieces will be on display in the NASCAR trailer all weekend for teams to examine.

The infraction was the first on the NASCAR-designed Car of Tomorrow, which has strict templates that leave little wiggle room for a crew chief. The severity of the penalty was NASCAR's way of informing teams it will not permit any alterations to the COT.

``We communicated to the teams earlier in the year that any modifications to these parts that had already been certified would be dealt with severely,'' Pemberton said.

It also follows a season-long crackdown on cheating that began at the Daytona 500, when NASCAR caught five teams breaking the rules. Six crew members were suspended and Michael Waltrip's crew chief was fined $100,000 -- the largest monetary fine in series history.

Now Eury has matched it, and Earnhardt said after his eighth-place finish Sunday he would cover any fine his cousin received.

``Whatever he needs me to do,'' Earnhardt said.

This is the most significant penalty Earnhardt and his team have received. He was docked 25 points and fined $10,000 for cursing during a TV interview after a win at Talladega in 2004. That deduction knocked him out of the points lead. It was the last time Earnhardt has seriously challenged for the championship.
Jr. Leaving DEI

Earnhardt Jr. leaving DEI

By Jerry Bonkowski, Yahoo! Sports

May 9, 2007

Dale Earnhardt Jr. officially will say goodbye to Dale Earnhardt Inc. on Thursday morning, Yahoo! Sports has learned.

A highly placed source within DEI as well as additional sources familiar with the situation told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday afternoon that both Junior and teammate Martin Truex Jr. will announce Thursday morning that they are leaving the DEI camp at the end of this season and will drive for Earnhardt's heretofore Busch Series operation, JR Motorsports.

Sirius Radio also reported late Wednesday afternoon that the Earnhardt/Truex split with DEI was a done deal and that the new Cup team entry will field Chevrolet chassis built by Hendrick Motorsports and will use Hendrick engines as well.

Sources tell Yahoo! Sports that Earnhardt Jr.'s primary sponsor, Budweiser, will follow Junior to JR Motorsports. Budweiser's contract with DEI is due to expire at the end of 2008, but Yahoo! Sports sources believe there are provisions within the contract for an early exit if Earnhardt Jr. does not drive the No. 8 Chevrolet for DEI.

The press conference, which is expected to be televised nationally, will take place at JR Motorsports headquarters in Mooresville, N.C., at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday.

There has been no comment thus far from either DEI president Teresa Earnhardt (Dale Jr.'s stepmother) or company director of global operations Max Siegel.

Earnhardt and sister Kelley Earnhardt Elledge have been in often contentious negotiations with Teresa Earnhardt that have sparked considerable posturing from both sides in the media.

Both siblings have said that if a deal with DEI was not in place by the end of May, they would consider a variety of options, including Junior leaving DEI. Just last week, DEI confirmed that it was talking with Robert Yates Racing about a possible merger and also a switch from Chevrolet power plants and chassis to Ford engines and chassis.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. began his racing career with DEI in 1996, shortly after the organization was formed by his late father, seven-time Cup champion Dale Earnhardt, and Teresa Earnhardt.

Earnhardt Jr. won back-to-back Busch Series championships in 1998 and 1999 before moving full-time to the then-Winston Cup Series in 2000. His first career Cup win was at Texas, with a memorable celebration between father and son in victory lane.

Voted the most popular driver in NASCAR by fans the last four years, Earnhardt Jr. has 17 career Cup wins but has yet to win his first Cup championship. He has gone 36 consecutive races without a win, his last being at Richmond in May 2006.
More Photos

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The witness who discovered Michael Waltrip's overturned car initially thought no one survived the accident until the NASCAR driver wiggled out the back window.

The witness, an 18-year-old college student at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, requested anonymity during a phone interview Wednesday with The Associated Press for fear of reprisal from Waltrip's fan base.

But she said she lives near the two-time Daytona 500 winner in Sherrill's Ford, and stumbled upon the accident when she was returning home around 2 a.m. Saturday. She saw an overturned Toyota Land Cruiser in a ditch and rushed over to check on the occupants. She didn't see anyone in the car and no one answered her shouts, so she called 911 for help.

``After I got off the phone I was walking around the car again and somebody stuck their foot out the back driver side of the window,'' she said. ``That's when Michael Waltrip got out. He wiggled out the back window. I knew immediately it was him. He just got out the back driver side window and stood up.''

The witness said she asked Waltrip how long he'd been in the car and he told her about 10 minutes.

``He was bleeding from his forehead and had some cuts on his fingers and arms,'' she said. ``I told him `You are really lucky you are alive. I didn't think anybody was alive in there.' We sort of talked for a minute or two, and I told him 911 was on the way, and he just turned around and started walking home.

``I didn't know what to say or what to do. He had a T-shirt and sweat pants and socks on, he might have taken his shoes off in the car, but I wasn't sure. And he just turned around and started walking home in his socks.''

Waltrip was charged Saturday evening with reckless driving and failing to report an accident, both misdemeanors. He told police he fell asleep the wheel and woke up to find his car overturned in the gravel.

Waltrip has a May 14 court date in Newton on the charges.

NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said NASCAR would talk with Waltrip on Friday in Texas.

Waltrip had a scheduled interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, but a representative, Brooke Hondros, canceled it, saying Waltrip wasn't feeling well.

But in an interview with The Charlotte Observer, he said he was embarrassed for leaving the scene.

``I just feel stupid,'' he told the newspaper. ``I feel like an idiot because this one is all me.''

State trooper B.L. Buchanan said he arrived on the scene to find the wrecked SUV -- which had also hit a telephone pole -- but no Waltrip. He said he went to Waltrip's home to speak to him around 3 a.m., but was unsuccessful in locating the driver.

Hondros said Waltrip was showering in his pool house and didn't hear the police when they arrived.

Buchanan said his shift ended at 5 a.m., and he finally made contact with Waltrip at 8 p.m. Saturday when he returned to duty and Waltrip called him. The officer met him at Waltrip's home and issued the citation.

Waltrip told The Observer alcohol did not contribute to the accident.

``I didn't go home to avoid anything,'' he said. ``I just went there trying to figure out what to do.''

Waltrip is having a rough first year as a car owner.

He was caught cheating during Daytona 500 preparations when NASCAR found a fuel additive in his engine, and was docked a record 100 driver points. His crew chief was fined a record $100,000 and suspended indefinitely, as was his competition director.

Meanwhile, he has failed to qualify for the five races since the 500.

Dale Jarrett, who drives one of Waltrip's cars, has needed a provisional to make five of the six races this year and is currently 37th in the points. David Reutimann, his other driver, has failed to make two races and is 43rd in points.

Jeff Gordon the voice of NASCAR

Over the past couple of weeks and with Jeff Gordon winning the last two races, the media has been stating that Nascar has been silent since 2001, with Earnhardt passing away. The speculation is that Jeff Gordon may not want to be the voice or the face of Nascar but it may just become his position anyways.

Agree or Disgree? Why?

He's one of those guys that I like to see running up front because I respect him. I won't go get a 31 sticker to put on my car but when he starts passing cars I can feel a smile creep onto my face. He could have had that win today but he refused to take it. Didn't he do that a week or two ago, too?

But man, what a season he's had so far. He's won, what, 2 out of 3 starts in Busch? 4 top-5 finishes for 5 starts in Nextel? He always seems to run middle of the pack so it would be really cool to see him sneak into the Chase this season.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR announced Wednesday that it has confiscated the primary car of the No. 55 Toyota team that competes in the Nextel Cup Series with driver Michael Waltrip, as a result of rule violations found during pre- and post-qualifying inspection for the Daytona 500.
It seems they found an additive used in aircraft fuel in his tank.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- In what could be called the most severe set of sanctions ever delivered by NASCAR in one day, four Nextel Cup crew chiefs were suspended and their teams were fined a total of $150,000, 150 driver points and 150 car owner points Tuesday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway.

Evernham Motorsports took the biggest hit as its lead car, the No. 9 Dodge of driver Kasey Kahne, lost its team director, Kenny Francis, for four races beginning with Sunday's Daytona 500; Kahne was docked 50 driver points and owner Ray Evernham 50 owner points.

Kahne's teammates, Elliott Sadler (No. 19) and Scott Riggs (No. 10) lost their team directors, Josh Browne and Rodney Childers, respectively, for two races apiece; Sadler and Riggs will lose 25 driver points each, and owners Evernham (19) and James Rocco (10) will be docked 25 owner points following the Daytona 500.

...and Tony is hot! I think he's going to be pretty dominant this year and I can almost smell another Cup.

While I don't personally care for him, I'm looking forward to seeing how Kevin Harvick performs this season. I'm also keeping an eye on Johnson, Mears, and Hamlin this year. I think I've already mentioned this in the off-season, but maybe that was somewhere else. Don't be surprised if you see one of -- if not both -- the Busch brothers in the top runnings this season.

I didn't keep up with much news this year so I was wondering:

If Martin is in the 01, what happened to Nemecheck? Who's in the 6, that Regan feller? There were a few other driver switches that had me confused but now I can't remember which ones.

Here's to hoping Elliot can turn his luck around in the #19 Dodge (although if Saturday night was any indication, it's going to be another bumpy season)...

DWI for Al Unser

Racing great Al Unser Jr. hit in DWI rap

LAS VEGAS - Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. was charged with driving under the influence after leaving the scene of a freeway crash, police said yesterday.

Unser was arrested after he was identified as the driver of a car that sideswiped another vehicle on the Las Vegas Beltway on Thursday, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Honea said.

Unser's vehicle had little damage, but the other car crashed into a cement center median. The driver reported no injuries at the scene, Honea said.

Honea said Unser failed several field sobriety tests before being taken into custody.

The 44-year-old Unser was charged with driving under the influence, misdemeanor hit and run, failure to render aid in an accident and failure to report an accident.

Unser is the son of Indianapolis 500 racing great Al Unser and nephew of three-time Indy winner Bobby Unser.

Teresa Earnhardt - "Deadbeat Owner"?

By Jerry Bonkowski, Yahoo! Sports

January 23, 2007

CONCORD, N.C. – Teresa Earnhardt, a "deadbeat owner"?

Why, them's almost fightin' words.

During Tuesday's NASCAR Media Tour stop at Richard Childress Racing in Welcome, N.C., Kevin Harvick did a bit of lobbying for rival Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his on-going, drawn-out contract negotiations to remain at Dale Earnhardt Inc., after this season, taking a direct shot at Little E's stepmother and primary DEI owner.

"I think it's hard when you have what I call a deadbeat owner that doesn't come to the racetrack," Harvick said. "You always see Rick Hendrick, Richard Childress, Chip Ganassi and all these other owners, and they all come to the racetrack.

"It's not just a money bit, where someone says, 'Well, I can make money off Dale Jr. or off Dale Earnhardt.' You can't run these race teams away from the racetrack. You have to be at the race track, you have to play the politics of the sport, you have to be part of your team and you have to understand what's going on. Me, from the outside looking in, it just doesn't look like that's happening."

Tuesday evening, prior to the debut of the Paul Newman-narrated biography of his late father, "Dale," the younger Earnhardt had little to say when asked by Yahoo! Sports to comment directly to what Harvick said.

"Man, you're killing me," Earnhardt replied. "That's (Harvick's comments) ridiculous. I don't really think there's a comment for Kevin's remarks."

Yahoo! Sports also asked Junior whether he would like his stepmother at races to support him, as owners of other Cup teams do to their drivers. While not making excuses for her absences, Junior alluded to some of the things Teresa Earnhardt has gone through since the death of Dale Sr.

"With everything that's happened, not just to the company but to the family over the last five years, she's had a full plate," Junior said. "The things she's been responsible for willingly and openly are very important for a long time, the battle over the autopsy photos (of her late husband), all these things."

"That's just the tip of the iceberg of the stuff that she's been responsible for, and had to take care of and had to deal with. That's probably been the sole reason why she hasn't been as visible at the race track and what not. But she's taken [care of] things that are much important when it comes to the family."

Whether Teresa Earnhardt's presence and theoretical moral support at races might improve the success of the entire organization, the younger Earnhardt seemed to be willing to cut his stepmother some slack.

"I've got guys and DEI has great people in great positions for us to be successful on the race track," he said. "We've got (DEI director of motorsports) Richie Gilmore and Max (new director of global operations Max Siegel) coming in. We've got people in the right places. I like everybody that works there. I love our team and all the guys on our team. That's all you really need is good people around you. She (Teresa) delegates real well. I get along with Richie and he does a great job running the motorsports side of it."

Despite Harvick's comments, Earnhardt said contract negotiations are continuing to potentially keep him at DEI, but added he didn't expect anything to be completed – if at all – for at least "a couple more months."

For what it's worth, Harvick, whose nickname is Happy, said he most certainly would live up to that moniker if Junior became his teammate next season.

"How happy would I be to have him as a teammate? I'd jump up and down," Harvick said.
Benny Parsons

(AP) -- Benny Parsons made a career of beating the odds, rising up from a childhood of poverty in the North Carolina foothills to a job as a Detroit cabbie, and eventually, becoming a NASCAR champion.

When he was diagnosed with lung cancer, Parsons had every reason to believe he would beat that, too. But despite a battle that saw "BP" carrying an oxygen tank around the race track, Parsons couldn't win this fight.

He died Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., where he had been hospitalized since Dec. 26 because of complications from his treatment. He was 65.

"Benny Parsons was a true champion -- both on the race track and in life," NASCAR chairman Brian France said. "Benny loved our sport and the people that make it up and those people loved him. He will be remembered as being a great ambassador for the sport."

No matter what you thought of the man as a broadcaster, he was a good guy and a great driver. He'll be missed.

Jr. Speaks His Mind

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 2007 NASCAR season unofficially kicked off with preseason testing here on Monday, and it didn't take long for one driver to stir things up.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. admitted Monday that his relationship with stepmother and team owner Teresa Earnhardt "ain't a bed of roses."

And with negotiations over a new long-term contract being oftentimes contentious and moving at a snail-like pace, the relationship between the Earnhardts may be becoming more like "The War of the Roses."

Three weeks ago, Teresa Earnhardt publicly questioned Junior's desire and motivation in a story that appeared in the Wall Street Journal. At the time, her stepson held his tongue.

But during Monday's test session at Daytona, Earnhardt the driver fired a huge salvo back at Earnhardt the team owner, even subtly threatening that he might jump ship and potentially take prized big-bucks sponsor Budweiser with him.

"Absolutely, my relationship with the car owner is definitely going to factor into my decision to drive there," Junior said. "I haven't talked to Teresa about what she said in the paper. I figured if anything needed to be said, she'd call me up and say it. But you know, my and her relationship definitely factor into my decision to drive there."

On the surface, Earnhardt's comments could be construed as posturing to speed up the pace of contract negotiations, as well as an attempt to force Teresa into giving him a piece of the ownership of Dale Earnhardt Inc. – which may be the biggest stumbling block in the negotiations.

But for a guy who for years has refused to comment at length about the relationship he has with his father's widow, his words Monday were quite enlightening.

"I don't want to really get too personal, but Teresa is my stepmother, and I have a mother at home that I have a very good relationship with," Junior said. "Mine and Teresa's relationship has always been very black and white, very strict and in your face. It is what it is."

And what it is would appear to be not very pretty, judging from the sarcasm seemingly dripping from Junior's words.

"The relationship that we have today is the same relationship we had when I was six years old when I moved into that house with Dad and her," Junior said. "It's always been the same. It hasn't gotten worse over the last couple years or last couple months. It's always been the same, the way I felt about her then is the way I feel about her now."

Since the death of her husband on the final lap of the 2001 season-opening Daytona 500, Teresa Earnhardt has become one of the most reclusive owners in Nextel Cup, prompting some critics to call her the Howard Hughes of NASCAR. She attends few races in person and rarely gives media interviews.

But there's no denying that she's one of the most powerful women in the sport.

Meanwhile, Junior is well aware that DEI's contracts with him and Budweiser both expire at the end of the upcoming 2007 season. Trying to pry Budweiser away could be a formidable task, and Junior may have to resign himself to staying with DEI if he wants to continue driving his world-famous ride.

"I like driving the red Bud car with the No. 8 on it," Junior said. "To drive that car, I basically have to drive at DEI."

Still, Junior left himself an out, adding, "To get this new deal done is going to be very difficult."

At times during Monday's media session, Junior seemingly channeled the spirit of his father. Instead of being the laidback, good ol' boy that the NASCAR world has come to love, Junior showed some of the spit and vinegar that his oftentimes cantankerous old man was known for.

"What's important to me is give me a good race car, don't give me any mess other than that," he proclaimed. "Just give me a good race car, make it run fast, give me guys I enjoy working with and going to the race track [with].

"I'll do whatever you need me to do with the sponsors and everything else, just don't make everything a hassle and don't make everything a pain and you'll have my dedication and everything else you need as far as my being a driver goes."

Junior wasn't afraid to say what was on his mind, just like his old man. Perhaps his theme for the upcoming season will be No More Mr. Nice Guy, and maybe this seemingly new attitude is the one ingredient he has been missing in his quest to become a Nextel Cup champion.

"I don't want to come here and [not] compete well and run well," said Junior, who did return to the Chase in 2006 after a one-year absence. "I don't want to just get by. I want the best – the best cars, the best people."

In other words, he wants from DEI what the Jimmie Johnsons, Tony Stewarts and Matt Kenseths get from teams like Hendrick, Gibbs and Roush – and Richard Childress Racing, where his father drove and where the rumor mill often has Junior eventually landing.

"We see other companies and teams doing what it takes and making the right moves, and I just want to be at the same situation as I see other drivers in," Junior said. "I know I'm a good enough race car driver and I deserve it. I'm just trying to get it all settled and make it right."

He took a big step toward that on Monday. Now, if only Teresa was listening … or even cared.

No one got into bump drafting during the first session..maybe today? But Jr won't be there ..his bro Kerry will be testing the cars at the track today. Heck Tony Stewart doesn't even show up at these test sessions...and look how great he is! Toyota's fared well also..Jarrett was in the top 10. Looks like Dodge has some work to do on their engines...AGAIN!

Gordon's wife pregnant: Due date early July
From Press Release
December 13, 2006
01:50 PM EST (18:50 GMT)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- On Wednesday, Jeff Gordon announced that wife Ingrid Vandebosch is pregnant.

"We're obviously very excited," Gordon said in a statement that appeared on his Web site. "Christmas came early for us this year.

"This is a very special gift for us -- one that we're both looking forward to. The due date is early July, and Ingrid and I can't wait to be parents.

"We've known for a little while, but we couldn't wait any longer to share the good news with our friends and fans."

Gordon, 35, married Vandebosch in a small, private ceremony in Mexico on Nov. 7.

Gordon and Vandebosch have been together since 2004. They appeared in the movie Taxi, in which the 37-year-old model played a bank robber and Gordon made an uncredited cameo appearance at her invitation.

Gordon announced his engagement to Vandebosch in Sonoma, Calif., in June and then won the Nextel Cup race the next day.

Ok, I don't know about everyone else, but the commercials are really starting to kill it for me. I am starting to feel like I am watching more comercials than racing.

NASCAR needs to do something soon because it is getting so annoying. I don't even watch the races live anymore. I just tape them and watch them later when I can fast forward through all of the commercials.

October 9, 2006 2:58 am EDT Red flag
By Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! SportsSide-by-side at Talladega. (Getty Images)
TALLADEGA, Ala. – Over the rolling Alabama hills, the soft autumn breeze still whistles through Dixie, finding a legendary track on race week and a sea of flags to push and pull – American flags, driver flags and the flag that remains the third rail of NASCAR, the Confederate.

In America, a NASCAR race is the last major sporting event where the Stars and Bars is still so prevalent, still so prominent, and while the debate over whether the flag's presence is appropriate isn't new, the stakes for NASCAR continue to get higher.

After a decade of massive growth, NASCAR's popularity has slowed and television ratings have slumped. To restart its progress, NASCAR must continue to attract new fans in fresh, more diverse markets, many of whom view the Confederate flag as a symbol of racism and oppression. Yet NASCAR doesn't want to alienate its loyal base, many of whom view the waving flags in the infield as a symbol of honor, history and traditional Southern pride.

Which is why the flag issue – symbolic of many others including prerace prayer and moving races out of the South to fresh markets in the North, Midwest and West – remains an issue NASCAR can't easily solve.

A year ago NASCAR CEO Brian France condemned the flag on "60 Minutes" and reiterated his company's "commitment to diversity."

But that has done little to pull the flags down here at Talladega; they were out in force all weekend, hung from homes and trees on the drive to the track, placed in the back windows of trucks and cars and run up makeshift flag poles on motor homes throughout the party-packed infield.

In fact, France even may have strengthened the resolve to keep them flying.

And France's comments – "It's not a flag that I look at with anything favorable, that's for sure," he said – have not been publicly embraced or repeated by people with the most influence over fans: the drivers themselves.

Yahoo! Sports asked more than 30 major drivers for their thoughts on the Confederate flag, whether they felt it created an unwelcoming environment to potential fans, and if so, whether it would be appropriate to ask their supporters to not fly it.

All but one turned down requests for private interviews, written statements or any comment on the issue. Many did so tersely.

The only driver we found willing to speak on the issue during Talladega race week was Dale Earnhardt Jr., the sport's most popular and powerful star who holds tremendous sway over his legion of fans. Earnhardt, who previously has expressed concern over the flag's meaning, hardly made a definitive statement, but at least had the guts to say something.

"We live in a country where you can speak freely and do as you may," Earnhardt said. "I don't know [if] what that flag stands for is the same for me as it is the guy who might have it flying out there.

"I am not going to agree with everything everybody does all my life. So I don't have any control over it."

When that is the best you can get out of nearly three dozen supposedly fearless, independent and talkative drivers, the silence is as telling as the sagging TV numbers.

NASCAR still has a flag (and image) issue. But no one wants to discuss the elephant in the infield.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twenty-nine races into the 2006 NASCAR season and television ratings have been either down or flat in 27 of them (numbers for Sunday's UAW-Ford 500 run here at Talladega Superspeedway have not been released). Not even the highly publicized Chase for the Nextel Cup, the sport's championship system, has held audiences. Not since Martinsville in April has a telecast's numbers improved year over year.

Local fans bring the flag. (Chip English)
Some weeks the drops have been precipitous – down 14.5 percent for the first New Hampshire race, 12 percent for the second, a Chase race no less. Kansas, also a Chase race, was off 11 percent.

Still, NASCAR remains highly popular. It still gets sizable television numbers that all but the NFL would kill for. The circuit is still awash in sponsorship and endorsement money and continues to attract the best drivers from other racing leagues.

Most importantly, it still is exponentially bigger than it was a decade ago, when it experienced a monumental surge in popularity. In no way is it a business in trouble.

But in terms of sustained growth, the television numbers at least suggest that the boom period is over.

France long has pointed to attracting new fans as the key to NASCAR's future and has said he personally spends part of each day working on diversity issues. NASCAR has numerous fan, driver and mechanic outreach programs geared toward minorities and is pouring major money into each initiative.

But while statistical evidence is not available, few believe the programs have significantly changed the racial makeup of the grandstands on race day. While there is no definitive study showing that NASCAR's image – hurt by the Confederate flag – is keeping would-be fans away, common sense says it can't help.

For many minorities, as well as many whites, a sporting event where Confederate flags still flap freely is an unwelcoming and negative place.

"For a lot of people it is a very loaded symbol that has a history of enslavement and hostility built up into it," said Marsha Houston, a professor at the University of Alabama who specializes in interracial communications.

"African-Americans find it very difficult to separate this history from the symbol itself," said Houston, who is black. "They also see people displaying the symbol as being racist, bigoted and anti-black. As a scholar I understand that symbols have multiple meanings and don't have the same meaning to everyone.

"But personally, [if I saw it at a track], I would go home," she said. "I try not to encounter people who display the flag in the back of their truck. My personal feeling is it is an affront to me."

THE 2 MINUTE DRILL MOTORSPORT
Top female driver Patrick may leave IRL for NASCAR

Associated Press

Indianapolis, Ind -- NASCAR could be getting a makeover next season. With Juan Pablo Montoya, a Colombian, bringing an international flavour to the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, the circuit is now apparently considering another major move -- bringing North America's top female driver, Danica Patrick, to the series. The Orlando Sentinel reported that Patrick's father was having exploratory discussions with some NASCAR teams and attended Sunday's race as the guest of Roush Racing. The report fuelled speculation that Patrick, whose contract with Rahal Letterman Racing will expire after this season, could be leaving the Indy Racing League for NASCAR.

NASCAR Nation cannot have it both ways. Either you're on board for hard-nosed racing, or settle into the La-Z-Boy for more neutered racing.

Jeff Gordon's late-race tactic was no different than those utilized by Dale Earnhardt, and for all those who complain about NASCAR being vanilla in the years since Earnhardt's death, Sunday should have been a feel good flashback to the glory days

Gordon fined $10K for incident with Kenseth
Veteran says he's through worrying about what people think of him

Jeff Gordon says the person that NASCAR fined $10,000 on Tuesday for shoving Matt Kenseth after Sunday's race at Bristol Motor Speedway is closer to who he is than what fans have seen.

Gordon, also placed on probation until Aug. 30, 2006, took a two-handed jab at Kenseth on pit road when Kenseth approached him to explain the bump that sent the four-time Nextel Cup champion from third place to 21st on the final lap.

Well,
It was a great day/race I thought. I had great seats and even though it rained, it was still action packed. Junior got a top 5 & Stewart wrecked early on....it doesnt get much better than that. Actually when Tony crashed the only people that weren't cheering were two fans of his and they kept quiet about it. haha Congrats to Kasey also!

P.S. Even though he isn't my favorite driver, I got to give props to the #24 team, Gordon's car was tough all day!

I had to work so only saw the last 96 laps of the race. Looks as if I saw all the "interesting" action at the end of the race. I went on Nascar.com this morning and read recaps of everything and this paragraph caught my eye......

"Still wearing his helmet and HANS device, Gordon stalked Kenseth on pit road. When Kenseth approached in what looked to be an apologetic way, Gordon gave him a hard shove that knocked him back several feet"

This is such a false statement. Even the people I know who dislike Gordon saw the same thing I saw. Kenseth approached Gordon's car on pit road. And whatever you may think of what transpired, the paragraph above reads as if Gordon went looking for Kenseth after the race............I mean, it actually is written as "stalked".

Went to qualifying! All kinds of Autographs...Kasey signed my new tank top! Great pics of Jeff Gordon,Tony Stewart, Elliott Sadler, Jeff Burton, Denny Hamlin,Jack Roush.
The best part was hanging with Denny Hamlin's crew chief..Mike Ford! He met up with us after Denny took the crew to dinner. Needless to say...a long night! We got to meet Travis Kvapil and J.J. Yeley. At 2:30 AM , we took Mike Ford back to his RV..was hanging in the drivers' RV section til 3:30 AM. How bout that "White Lightning"???
Sunday's race was amazing! Denny's win "sealed" the whole experience.....can't wait for JULY!

Hello, I'm new to this tribe. I'm a Junior fan and have been looking at your tribe here. Nice :)

Ok, now to the nitty-gritty. After the stunt he pulled in the 500 (wrecking Kenseth and admitting it in post-race) he needs to be suspended. Especially after all his talk earlier in the week about driver safety. I know it was "get-back" supposedly but c'mon, he gave alot worse than he got. I have hated Tony Stewart since his second year when he started being a cocky ass, but was regaining respect for him after the class season he had last year. His dumb ass attack today sent his rep with me back to the sewer.

When they broke for rain last night at lap 36, I called it a night and hit the rack. Was hoping to wake up and see that Riggs or Hamlin won, but just another for the Lowe's crew.

OK boys, it's time to stop yappin' and time to start lappin'.

Everything that possibly could have been said in the weeks leading up to Sunday's 48th running of the Daytona 500 (1:30 p.m. ET, NBC) has been said -- from Preseason Thunder to the Gatorade Duels -- and now it's time to put the all the preseason tests to the ultimate test.

After the Busch race yesterday, Jr's looking strong! It would be sweet for him to be in victory lane.

All the talk about bumping and drafting has me concerned...some bad wrecks yesterday. The new and young drivers are so aggressive..gotta love that ! Denny Hamlin sent to the rear on a restart by Nascar for "rough" driving.
Here's hoping to a good "clean" race !

I dropped Johnson from my team since Knaus wasn't in the game and picked up Gordon because he was looking strong. Also dropped Newman to pick up Kyle Busch with my difference in points. Johnson & Newman finished 1st & 2nd and Gordon & Busch finished like 25th & 26th.

I'm off to a great start... This was my problem last season. The guys I'd drop would end up winning and the guys I'd pick up would have all kinds of problems.

Ha ha, i'm sorry but i think this is hilarious.......

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Kurt Busch has a new team, new cars and a new pit crew.

He also has a new look.
Busch saw a cosmetic surgeon in the offseason, and came out with his once-prominent ears pinned back closer to his head.

"Yeah, a little slicker," Busch said Friday, grinning. "I've got it working in the draft now."

Busch said he wasn't quite clear on the details of the procedure - he was under sedation - but he definitely is pleased with the result.

"I've wanted to do it for a few years now, but never had the time," he said.

The new look has turned a few heads in the garage.

I must admit i will miss the chants of KEEBLER ELF...KEEBLER ELF!!!

Sorry to any Kurt Busch fans out there, you have to see the humor in this though!!!

Fantasy League! Join today!!

Hi,

I'm starting up my NASCAR (Nextel cup) fantasy league once again. The group is already made, so I'm looking for some members! I figured this would be the best place to promote the fantasy league, so here goes.

My league is based in Yahoo!'s fantasy sports section. If you'd like to join, you'll need a Yahoo! ID. Once you've got that, signing up is easy, and gameplay is fun!

For those who have never played in a fantasy league before, the concept is simple -- especially in NASCAR. You create a team of drivers, and then, before each race, pick drivers from that team to perform during that race. Then, based on how those picked drivers actually do in that race, you get points. Who will make the best picks -- and thus rise to the top of the league? Are you a NASCAR pro who will dominate the league, or would you be better off guessing your way through the season?

Q. Does it take a lot of time to play in the fantasy league?
A. Not at all. It takes a few minutes to set up your team, and then just a few minutes before each week's race to get your team ready to go. You needn't miss any of the race -- Yahoo!'s fantasy league engine will automatically assign points to your picked drivers based on how they do in the race!!!

So are you ready to join? If you are, you can read the below instructions and get set up!! If you have any questions, concerns, comments, etc. please contact me at jupiter@darmin.com!!

To join:

Here's the info you'll need:

Group ID#: 6176
Group Name: Race Kings
Group Password: greenflag

Head on over to Yahoo!'s fantasy sports section:
Y! Fantasy Sports (http://fantasysports.yahoo.com/)
and go to the "Fantasy Auto Racing" section, or just use the easy link:
Fantasy Auto Racing (http://racing.fantasysports.yahoo.com/) (That's the more direct link)

You'll need a Yahoo! ID to play the fantasy league. If you have one, click "Sign In" at the top of the page. If you don't have a Y! ID, click "Sign Up" at the top of the page, instead.

Once you're signed in and on the auto racing home page, you're ready to continue.

There should be a big button on the auto racing home page that says, "Sign Up!" Click that.

Click "I Accept" to accept the terms of service. (You don't need to read it)

You next go to your team creation page. Simply type in a team name... Doesn't have to be anything creative. (Mine is "jupiter darmin." Very uncreative, yet effective.) You'll have to set a couple other options, but they're all easy to figure out. Submit your info.

Click "Submit" on the next screen.

Once you've created your team, you'll want to join it in my league. Below all your team info (on the 3rd step), click "Join a Group." On the next screen, click "Join a Private Group."

On this next screen, type in the group ID# (which is 6176) and the password (which is greenflag). You can then join my league!!!!

You don't need to set up your team right away. If you'd like to, there are plenty of help files on Yahoo! to help you out with this. If you'd like to wait till later, though, I'm going to be posting the rules on my website in the near future. (My website is http://www.darmin.com/)

If you have any problems or questions, don't hesitate to email me at jupiter@darmin.com.

I'm posting this far in advance to give everyone a chance to join in on the action! The first race is (I believe) Feb 19th, so DON'T MISS IT!!! Woo hoo!

Good luck, everyone! And if you know any NASCAR fans -- tell them to read this post and join my league!!!!

GOOD LUCK!!
